Ear Piercing Aftercare

Post Ear piercing, there are some precautions to be followed for aftercare but hardly any medications to be used, unless necessary.

If aseptic measures have been taken by the Doctor to prepare the ear lobes and also safe sterile studs have been used , there is usually no chance of Infection or Inflammation.

During ear piercing aftercare, yourself, the baby or child can go about with normal activities including face washing and having a shower or bath .

  • Only instruction here is, do not intentionally splash water on the pierced part .
  • If you are a swimmer or sports person, you can resume swimming and sports, however doctor will give you specific aftercare instructions.  The first 2 weeks is when you have to be a little extra careful.

Otherwise, up to 3 to 5 weeks, there is no need for doing anything.  It gives time for the pierced part to heal and if left to itself there is no chance of infection nor will the hole close off.

  • Do not apply any medicated ointment or put any oil nor use any strong astringent and disinfectant or any other strong detergent which can irritate the pierced part and invite other medical problems.
  • Also be careful about wearing and removing tight fitting clothes for upto 6 weeks when there after, one can safely remove the studs or rotate them regularly and retain it.

Though the stem of the ear stud fits snugly into the back clasps, a tight fitting clothing can accidentally get caught in the clasps and if pulled with the clothing the ear stud can come off the ear .

In normal circumstances there is no way the stem can detach from the back clasps as there is a double locking system . Only if wrenched out forcibly that the stem of the stud can come off from the ear and back clasp.

  • Do not keep touching or fiddling with the piercing or jewellery.  Allow it to settle naturally.

At the end of 3 to 5 weeks, you can safely remove the studs  at home by gently holding the back clasp with a firm grip preferably with the left hand fingers and then holding the top or head of the ear stud with the right hand fingers and gently pulling out the stem , which will free itself from the ear and the clasp falls off .

Within a couple of hours, you can either put back the ear studs or change it with the ones you have bought, taking basic hygiene steps during the ear piercing aftercare. Usually, the ear jewelry bought at the jewellers  will have a thread which has to  twirled till it locks itself securely .

Do not keep the hole without any ornament for upto a period of 6 months or more initially, ensuring that the hole does not close. Also do not use any twig or external objects in the pierced hole.

If, after piercing, should your child have any problems whatsoever please contact us immediately . Doctor will give the appropriate advice and instructions.  In several years of piercing we have not had any problems after the procedure or during the ear piercing aftercare.
